WHAT:        Limited Submission Proposal for the Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Frontier Research Centers Program 

WHO:          Texas A&M University faculty.  TAES, TEES and TTI personnel may wish to submit internal proposals through their own agency. 

WHY:          DOE anticipates making awards ranging between $2,000,000 and $5,000,000 per year for a maximum period of five years. 

WHEN:        Internal proposal deadline of May 26, 2008. 

HOW:          TAMU faculty should submit internal proposal via email for review by the internal selection committee.   

THE FINE PRINT: 

The funding agency, DOE, has limited the number of proposals to three per institution. 

BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  The Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Frontier Research Centers Program is designed to accelerate the rate of scientific breakthroughs needed to create advanced energy technologies for the 21st century.  The EFRCs will pursue the fundamental understanding necessary to meet the global need for abundant, clean and economical energy. 

EFRCs will bring together the skills and talents of multiple investigators to enable fundamental research of a scope and complexity that would not be possible with the standard individual investigator or small group research project.  Research topics may include:  a secure energy future; hydrogen economy; solar energy utilization; superconductivity; solid-state lighting; advanced nuclear energy systems; clean and efficient combustion of 21st century transportation fuels; geosciences for facilitating 21st century energy systems; electrical energy storage; materials under extreme environments; and catalysis for energy. 

DOE anticipates making awards ranging between $2,000,000 and $5,000,000 per year for a maximum period of five years.

Internal Selection Procedures and Deadlines

May 23, 2008:  Deadline for an email of intent, including the names of the PI and co-PIs, title of internal proposal and a 1-3 sentence description of the project.  Send email of intent    

May 26, 2008: Deadline to obtain signatures of approval from your department head and college dean to submit an internal proposal to the Office of Sponsored Projects for review by the internal selection committee.  The internal proposal should include:

(1)     An executive summary, up to three pages, based on the proposal description as outlined in the DOE program announcement;

(2)     Summary budget;

(3)     Project and Management Plans (including team members);

This completed form should be submitted electronically for review by the internal selection committee.

Please read the RFP carefully for specific requirements of the program here        

Selection of a proposal will be based on DOE guidelines.  The needs of the university’s reinvestment plan will also be taken into account. 

During the selection process, the internal selection committee may contact departments and colleges for their opinions and commitments.  They may also request additional information from PIs.

June 10, 2008: The Internal Selection Committee will notify PIs of the result of the internal competition.

July 1, 2008:  Deadline for optional, but recommended, letter of intent.

October 1, 2008:  Deadline for full proposal.
