WHAT:        Limited Submission Proposal for the Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Inc. New Faculty Awards Program 

WHO:          PIs who start their first tenure-track appointment in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering in 2008. 

WHY:          The New Faculty Awards Program provides an unrestricted research grant of $50,000 for a period of five years. 

WHEN:        Internal proposal deadline of March 24, 2008.  

HOW:          Faculty should submit internal proposal via email for review by the internal selection committee.   

THE FINE PRINT:

The funding agency below has limited the number of preliminary proposals to one per institution.  If the number of faculty wishing to submit a proposal exceeds the number allowed by the agency, we will conduct an internal selection process. Below are due dates for the program, including the due date of the internal proposal for review by the internal selection committee, the date for announcement of the internal selection and the due date for submission to the agency.                                                       

AGENCY:  The Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Inc.

AGENCY PROGRAM TITLE:  New Faculty Awards Program

BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  The New Faculty Awards Program provides funding for new faculty members in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering at the start of their research and teaching activities.  A key feature of the award is an unrestricted tenure-track research grant that is awarded when the new faculty member formally begins the first year appointment. 

Recommendations for awards are based on evidence that the nominee has the potential to produce an independent body of scientific scholarship of outstanding quality and will make significant contributions to overall education in the chemical sciences.  Nominations are reviewed by distinguished faculty in the field of chemistry.

AGENCIES ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT:  The New Faculty Award Program is open to all academic institutions in the state, districts and territories of the United States of America that grant a doctoral degree in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering.  

AWARD INFORMATION:   The New Faculty Awards Program provides an unrestricted research grant of $50,000 for a period of five years.  

ELIGIBLE PROJECT COSTS:   The award may be used for any research or curriculum related purpose considered appropriate for the awardee’s professional activities and advancement.  Foundation approval is not required for budgetary changes after the award is made.  No part of the award may be used for institutional administrative purposes or academic-year salary.  Funds are normally expended over a period of five years.  

COST SHARING:  NONE.     

Internal Selection Procedures and Deadlines

March 21, 2008:  Deadline for an email of intent, including the name of the PI, title of internal proposal and a 1-3 sentence description of the project.  Send email of intent.

March 24, 2008: Deadline to obtain signatures of approval from your department head and college dean to submit an internal proposal to the Office of Sponsored Projects for review by the internal selection committee.  The internal proposal should include:

(1)     An executive summary, including project and teaching plans, up to three pages,  based on the proposal description as outlined in the Dreyfus Foundation announcement;

(2)  Summary budget

Selection of a proposal will be based on Dreyfus Foundation guidelines.  The needs of the university’s reinvestment plan will also be taken into account. 

During the selection process, the internal selection committee may contact departments and colleges for their opinions and commitments.  They may also request additional information from PIs.

April 4, 2008: The Internal Selection Committee will notify PIs of the result of the internal competition.

May 8, 2008:  Drefyus Foundation deadline for full proposal.
