AGENCY:  Burroughs Wellcome Fund

AGENCY PROGRAM TITLE:  2008 Career Awards for Medical Scientists

BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  The Burroughs Wellcome Fund 2008 Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS) are intended to support the physician scientist during the final one or two years of a mentored position and then allow the physician scientist to carry that support to an independent position.  Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease oriented, translational, or molecular, genetic or pharmacological epidemiology research.

The award consists of a postdoctoral/fellowship period (1-2 years) and a faculty period (five years minus the time spent in the postdoctoral period).  All faculty positions must be taken at U. S. or Canadian degree-granting institutions.  Candidates should not be more than 120 months past their most recent doctorate.  During the award period at least 75% of the awardee’s time must be devoted to research-related activities.

Candidates must be PIs with M.D.; D.D.S.; D.V.M.; M.D., Ph.D; D.D.S., Ph.D; D.V.M., Ph.D. or equivalent clinical degrees.   In addition, candidates must be a clinical fellow, resident, instructor (non-tenure track) or a postdoctoral researcher and have completed at least two years of research experience.  As a general guideline, candidates should not be more than 120 months past their most recent doctorate.

Candidates must be nominated by a dean or department chair at the degree-granting institution where they will take their postdoctoral/fellowship training under the award.  In addition, researchers who hold or have accepted a faculty appointment as an assistant professor or the equivalent are not eligible.

The full announcement can be found here.

AGENCIES ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT:  Eligible organizations include degree-granting institutions in the United States and Canada.

ELIGIBLE PROJECT COSTS:  Indirect Cost (F&A) Limitations:  Indirect costs are not allowed.  Burroughs Wellcome Fund will pay an administrative fee of 10% to the institution to cover the awardee’s fringe benefits, such as health insurance and retirement.  The support allocated for research is under the control of the awardee and may be used flexibly for items such as equipment, consumable supplies, travel to scientific meetings and laboratory personnel working with the awardee.

Prior approval by Burroughs Wellcome Fund is required when, within an award year, purchases of equipment exceed $20,000 or travel costs exceed $8,000.  Further, awardees may receive a no-cost extension up to the time they are reviewed for tenure.  Requests explaining why an extension is needed must be submitted in writing at least four months prior to the end of the award.

AWARD INFORMATION:  The Burroughs Wellcome Fund 2008 Career Awards for Medical Scientists are for $700,000 over five years.  The first two years of the award are the postdoctoral/fellowship period ($190,000), while the next three years are the faculty period ($510,000).

COST SHARING:  Institutions are expected to make a contribution to the awardee’s salary to maximize the amount that can be used for research.  In addition, BWF requires institutions to make a monetary commitment to an awardee’s career before the awardee begins the faculty portion of the award.
