WHAT: Limited Submission Proposal for the 2008 Searle Scholars Program
WHO: Texas A&M faculty who have begun or will begin their first appointment at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2006.
WHY: Grants are normally $240,000 for three years.

HOW: Faculty should submit an internal proposal via email for review by the internal selection committee.

The funding agency below has limited the number of proposals to two per institution for this particular program. If the number of faculty wishing to submit
a proposal exceeds the number allowed by the agency, we will conduct an internal selection process. Below are due dates for the program, including the
due date for the internal proposal for review by the internal selection committee, the date for announcement of the internal selection and the due date for date for submission to the agency.

AGENCY PROGRAM TITLE: 2008 Searle Scholars Program
BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The 2008 Searle Scholars Program is designed to support research in medicine, chemistry and the biological sciences. Applicants will be expected to be pursuing independent research careers in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine and the biological sciences.
Candidates should have begun or will begin their first appointment at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2006. Further, this appointment must be a tenure-track position, or its equivalent. Scholars shall have the maximum discretion in the budgeting and rebudgeting of funds to meet their research needs.
Scholars are expected to attend the Annual Searle Scholars’ Meeting which is normally held in Chicago in April. Abstracts and technical reports will be solicited prior to the meeting. Final technical and fiscal reports shall be due within 90 days of the termination of the award.

AGENCIES ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT: The 2008 Searle Scholars Program is open to invited universities and research institutions. Texas A&M University is on the list of invited institutions. No more than two applications will be accepted from any one institution. Applications are to be submitted by the institution and not by individual candidates.
AWARD INFORMATION: Grants are normally $240,000 for a three-year period, with $80,000 payable in the first year and equal sums payable in the second and third years. Normally, fifteen new awards will be made annually.
ELIGIBLE PROJECTS COSTS: The total salary plus benefits charged for the Scholar may not exceed $25,000.
COST SHARING: NONE.
Internal Selection Procedures and Deadlines
July 27, 2007: Deadline for an email of intent, including the name of the PI, title of internal proposal and a 1-3 sentence description of the project. Send email of intent.
July 30, 2007: Deadline to obtain approval from your department head and dean to submit an internal proposal to the Office of Sponsored Projects for review by the internal selection committee. The internal proposal should include:
An executive summary, up to three pages, based on the proposal description as outlined in the Searle Scholars Program Announcement;
Project and Management Plans;
Summary budget.

Please read the RFP carefully for specific requirements of the program here.
Selection of a proposal will be based on Searle Scholars Program guidelines. Meeting the needs of the university’s reinvestment plan will also be taken into account.
During the selection process, the internal selection committee may contact
departments and colleges for their opinions and commitments. They may also
request additional information from PI’s.
August 10, 2007: The Internal Selection Committee will notify PIs of the result of the internal competition.
September 28, 2007: Searle Scholars Program Deadline.
